Maintaining good oral hygiene during treatment is an important part of wearing braces, but it’s a problem for many patients. With your braces, it is important to spend a little extra time when you brush your teeth. Remember, you must still floss your teeth. It will take a little longer at first but keeping the area between your teeth clean will ensure that your teeth become straighter faster. If you have a removable orthodontic appliance such as retainers or Invisalign then you can brush your appliance with a toothbrush. Plaque needs to be thoroughly removed from your teeth, and when you have braces, it’s even more important to remove plaque. The brackets and wires in your mouth create places for plaque to hide. If plaque is not carefully and consistently removed from your teeth and around your braces, you run the risk of developing gum disease, tooth decay, enamel scarring and bad breath. Continue reading

Why is Flossing With Braces so Important?

Dental hygieneIn order to keep your teeth in mint-condition under your braces, it is imperative to brush and floss. Brushing is extremely important, but even after we brush food remains lodged between our teeth. This causes a buildup of plaque which can only be removed with dental floss.

What Happens If I Do Not Floss?
With or without braces the consequences of not flossing add up quickly. For starters, after food remains on your teeth for a certain period of time it hardens and turns into tartar, which must be removed by a dentist. Tarter will build up at a much faster rate under braces, where particles can hide for extensive periods of time unseen and unbothered. Worst of all, gingivitis is an early form of gum disease directly linked to tartar buildup. Continue reading
