Keep Your Braces Clean

Cleaning dental braces

It is imperative that meticulous oral hygiene be maintained during any orthodontic treatment. Maintaining good oral hygiene during treatment is an important part of wearing braces, but it’s a problem for many patients. With your braces, it is important to spend a little extra time when you brush your teeth. Remember, you must still floss your teeth. It will take a little longer at first but keeping the area between your teeth clean will ensure that your teeth become straighter faster. If you have a removable orthodontic appliance such as retainers or Invisalign then you can brush your appliance with a toothbrush. Plaque needs to be thoroughly removed from your teeth, and when you have braces, it’s even more important to remove plaque. The brackets and wires in your mouth create places for plaque to hide. If plaque is not carefully and consistently removed from your teeth and around your braces, you run the risk of developing gum disease, tooth decay, enamel scarring and bad breath.

Brushing
Use a soft bristled tooth brush (manual or electric). Make sure you brush above and below the arch wires and at the gum line. Try and brush after every meal.

Flossing
Use threaders or super floss at least once a day.

Mouth Rinse
Use a fluoride mouth rinse daily to help prevent cavities.

Dental check ups
Make sure to continue to see your dentist regularly every six months, or more often if your orthodontist recommends it. Your dentist and hygienist will not only make sure your mouth and teeth are clean, but will also make sure all your braces, brackets and wires are intact and working effectively. They can also address any questions you have regarding brushes, floss, other oral hygiene aids, and tips for cleaning braces in any area of your mouth that you find difficult to reach.
