Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that corrects improperly positioned teeth and jaws. In other words, orthodontists help straighten protruding, crooked, or crowded teeth, teeth spaced too far apart, or excessive underbites or overbites.
Orthodontists have the knowledge and tools to treat all of the above issues and also have patience, as these alignment issues take time to address. Below are some examples of various orthodontic appliances that our office might recommend that you or your child wear while in orthodontic treatment.
•Braces – are composed of metal brackets bonded to the teeth and attached with a metal wire. These place pressure on your teeth, gradually moving them into the proper position. Our office offers clear braces or metal braces.
•Invisalign – removable clear thermoplastic aligners that are custom-made to fit your teeth. These are a great and advanced alternative to traditional metal braces.
•Headgear – a brace extending around the head from one side of the mouth to the other designed to help reposition teeth and restrict the growth of the upper jaw.
•Elastics – rubber bands attached to your braces to help aid in aligning your bite.
•Palatal Expander – this appliance is designed to widen the upper jaw so that the lower and upper teeth will fit together better.
•Retainer – a retainer is either fixed or removable and maintains the placement of your teeth and bite after other orthodontic treatment is done.
•Positioner – a removable appliance used after braces are removed designed to help complete the job. It helps with minor repositioning of the teeth.
